Letters / A ‘hustle’
I read this post (Half baked referendum; SN, 01/04/14) just now, and agree with it entirely.
In my view, it’s the job of all of our elected representatives to provide us with full information on the implications of this issue (and every other, while we’re about it), so that we can make reasoned and intelligent decisions on what (and who) to vote for.
Any other way amounts to what the Americans would call a ‘hustle’ – whereas we’d call it a con.
If the current crop of elected representatives isn’t prepared – or even able – to do what it’s been paid to do, it should immediately behave honourably by resigning from its posts, in order to make way for more capable and committed replacements who can and will advise us honestly.
If we make any mistakes at all in the coming polls, it’ll be the generations from 18+ years forward who’ll pay the most for it out of their future earnings and reduced capacity to act strategically for the good of their country; and their parents and grandparents too, but to a lesser extent. That cannot be allowed to happen.
