News / More floating digs

A FIFTH accommodation unit is expected in Lerwick tomorrow to house construction workers building French giant Total’s £800 million new Shetland Gas Plant.

It is expected that the 145-metre ship Regina Baltica, formerly a Baltic ferry, will remain in Lerwick for four months until the middle of July.

The Estonian-owned ship, which has recently been operating as an accommodation vessel in England and Germany, will provide living quarters for up to 300 people.

Regina Baltica will initially be based at the £3.2 million Mair’s Quay between Holmsgarth and the Lerwick power station, but Lerwick Port Authority said the ship may need to move berth on occasions.

LPA has been advised by chief site contractor Petrofac that the charter of the various barges and vessels will conclude at different times between May and August.
