News / Speeding through Brae
THREE local drivers have been issued with £100 fixed penalties this week after they were clocked driving one and a half times the speed limit in the township of Brae.
Shetland police announced on Friday that over the past two days they had stopped two men and a woman who had all been driving between 45 and 47mph in a 30mph zone.
Chief inspector Eddie Graham said he regularly heard complaints about problems on the roads in Brae due to the amount of vehicles involved in the oil and gas construction work at Sullom Voe, but this did not appear to be where the problem lay.
“While we have a sentiment from the local community about the volume of traffic and standards of driving, it is predominantly the people who are caught for speeding are locals,” he said.
He added that the police were regularly deploying speed cameras in different parts of the islands to discourage speeding.
