News / Lack of warrant halts Tesco extension
WORK on an extension to Tesco’s Lerwick store has been halted after it emerged that the supermarket giant had failed to ensure a building warrant was in place.
An area next to the South Road store’s main entrance is being converted to allow Tesco to begin offering a home delivery service in the islands.
The move, which the supermarket says is in response to customer demand, has caused concern among some small retailers in remoter parts of Shetland.
No work on the site has taken place this week after Shetland Islands Council confirmed Tesco did not have the necessary paperwork in place.
An SIC spokeswoman said: “We can confirm that building works had commenced at Tesco without the benefit of a building warrant.
“The SIC building standards officers have met with the developers on site to discuss the issue. They are now awaiting more information, and hope to have the matter concluded by the end of the week.”
A Tesco spokesman said the company was working closely with the local authority “to make sure that work on the extension can begin again very soon”.
