News / Piano prestige

Teeanger Sophie Wishart with the prize she won for her outstanding exam result.

A TEENAGER from Cunningsburgh has won a prestigious award having gained the highest mark in the UK for her grade seven piano exam.

A “delighted” Sophie Wishart, 16, has been awarded the Sheila Mossman Memorial Prize, which goes to the candidates who achieve the best marks in pianoforte in grades six, seven and eight.

The £150 award is endowed by friends and former pupils of Sheila Mossman, who died in 1971 having committed her life to music, including five years as an ABRSM (Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music) examiner.

The ABRSM provides a platform for candidates of nearly all musical instruments to take part in a graded examination system. These are held three times a year in Shetland, in March, June and November, usually in Islesburgh Community Centre.
