Letters / Receive back less than we pay in
In reply to Graham Johnston, Maurice Mullay, and Theo Nicolson (Four reasons to vote NO; SN, 17/01/14)
“We benefit from higher public spending than the rest of the UK, but pay no more tax.”
Yes, we do get more money per head than the UK average, by about £1200. But to pay for it. We provide the Treasury with £1700 more per head in tax. See table below.
As for your disingenuous last point, a YES vote is not a vote for Alex Salmond any more than a no vote is a vote for Ed Miliband. Is it?

Shetland News is asking its many readers to consider start paying for their dose of the latest local news delivered straight to their PC, tablet or mobile phone.
Journalism comes at a price and because that price is not being paid in today’s rapidly changing media world, most publishers - national and local - struggle financially despite very healthy audience figures.
Most online publishers have started charging for access to their websites, others have chosen a different route. Shetland News currently has over 600 supporters who are all making small voluntary financial contributions. All funds go towards covering our cost and improving the service further.
