Letters / A very small player
Beyond these shores the UK is recognised as a nation of significant standing and influence of which we in Scotland are an integral part.
In that context, we have influence over the actions of parliament through the democratic process where the United Kingdom:
• is at the forefront of international diplomacy;
• is a member of the Security Council;
• is a major agenda setter in the EU;
• is a member of international policy groupings such as G8;
• is seen as a taking a leading role in world affairs.
As part of the UK, Scotland shares in that role in national and international politics.
By comparison, an independent Scotland would be a very small player on a big international stage.
Around the world there are some 270 embassies and consulates, which represent the interests of UK business people, travellers and families living abroad.
Establishing an equivalent organisation for an independent Scotland would present a challenge of gargantuan logistical and financial proportions.
Throughout the world the United Kingdom is acknowledged as having among the finest armed forces. Therefore, as part of the UK we in Scotland share in the security that comes from that and, by way of Scottish regiments, naval and air bases, contribute in no small measure to the standing enjoyed by our fighting men and women.
The UK has been to the forefront in maintaining foreign aid and disaster relief in poor countries all over the world. Currently, Scotland plays an important part in supporting these worthwhile programmes, far in excess of anything possible as an independent nation. Better together – we can help that!
In past times much good has come about in times of distress and disaster through the actions of UK forces, government agencies overseas, charitable and benevolent organisations and the like. Scotland continues to play full part in all of that. Independence can only bring duplication of effort in the support and implementation of these activities.
Better together – we can better support all of that!
Vote NO in the Referendum.
