DA GADDERIE’S first exhibition of 2014, opening this weekend, is a showcase of the work of husband and wife duo Jane Porter-Jacobs and John Jacobs.

John has practiced and taught ceramics in California for thirty five years. Since moving to Shetland, he has set up his own ceramics studio and buit a high fire gas kiln. He makes his own clay and glazes.

“My glazes have been developed for their relevance to my surroundings and from my training in traditional Asian ceramics,” John said.

“I work for years to perfect a glaze and once in a while something intangible happens during a firing and I open a kiln to find an eye-catching piece that stands out from the rest.”

The ceramics featured in the exhibition are drawn from over 47 years of work and thousands of piece John has produced in Shetland and California.

Jane was born in Shetland and lived and worked as a teacher and artist in London, Greece and California, moving home – along with John – in 2004.

“The paintings and collages in this exhibition are simply about the things I enjoy and love about being in Shetland,” Jane said.

“I like to paint in acrylics and water colour. I use different papers to create more imaginative collages. Some of the work is more abstract but is still based in the landscape.

“In these collages I use photos of the landscape as a formal element in compositions which questions what I see.”

* The exhibition runs from Saturday 11 January to Sunday 9 February. Both artists will discuss their work in a talk at Da Gadderie at 2pm on Sunday 19 January.
