Letters / Totally irrelevant
Douglas Young kids himself if he thinks the amount of likes on his Facebook pages means anything (Invitation extended; SN, 09/12/13) as around 50 per cent of the people who like these pages do not live in Shetland, and those who do are following both pages.
There are a number of people like myself who will vote No who have liked the pages just to keep up with the in vogue rhetoric produced there.
If what Douglas calls “debate carried out at a high standard” is reflected in the manner Ian Tinkler was set upon by up to twelve yes supporters, then heaven help us if the vote goes their way.
Douglas, how ever many likes you get is totally irrelevant; I could argue that the Drumquin eatery in Brae has 945 likes, so people are more bothered about really great food than about the Yes campaign.
What is relevant is the fact that there have been three independently commissioned opinion polls in the two weeks since the white paper’s publication, and all three have shown support for independence lower than before Salmond launched this campaign for separation.
I have offered to debate this subject here and on the Times’ web page, I have even asked questions of you to get the debate going, but you never take up the gauntlet. I believe this to be because you carry a white feather.
The reason for this is when Ian posed his question on one Facebook page you went on the other page and ‘pleepin’ for help.
“Douglas Young; Ian has posted the following on the Yes Shetland page, can anyone assist with answers please”.
Having said that, I am willing to debate this subject with you here, letter for letter, subject for subject, and to a much wider audience than on Facebook.
Gordon Harmer,
Brae
