Letters / Discriminating and rude

I hope folk take up Douglas Young’s invitation (Make your own decision; SN, 1/12/13) to visit Yes Shetland on Facebook to see the standard of comment, which does include discrimination and rudeness.

Here are a couple of posts from their Facebook page as an example of their idea of reasoned and intelligent debate:

“Welcome to our new followers over the weekend. And we will try and make amends for voting Alistair Carmichael into Westminster some years ago by making him redundant on the 18th September 2014. By liking and sharing our page if you can, we will continue to raise awareness of YES up here at 61*N.

Jock Watson: With regards to Carmichael. I hope he’s tied on a flaming longboat come Up Helly Aa 2015.

Shirley Brogan” Actually Shetland, I think Alistair is a great help to you in your compaign. hahahah – not that he seems to know it!”

“The people of Shetland and Orkney would like to apologise unreservedly for giving their undying support and loyalty to the Liberal Democrat Party and causing the Rt Hon Alistair Carmichael MP to become Scottish Secretary. We solemnly promise to do everything in our power to bring this situation to a sudden end on 19th September 2014. (We take no responsibility for the other Alistair, that’s Edinburgh’s fault)

Jock Watson:Leith are more responsible for Darling but even a lot of people from there despise the man as this picture I took a few years ago of a poster in a pub window attests.”

There is a photo of a poster of Alistair Darling with a hang man’s noose above his head accompanying this last comment.

I think this says more than anything about the standard of debate on their Facebook page.
