News / Explosive relationship

A WELSH woman who lied to the police that her ex partner was harbouring illegal explosives in an act of resentment following their separation pled guilty to wasting police time at Lerwick Sheriff Court on Thursday.

The court heard that 37 year old Dawn Hughes, who now lives in Flintshire, had been drunk when she called the police on 24 August from her home at 5 Stucca, Hillswick.

Procurator fiscal Duncan Mackenzie said that both Hughes and her ex had used explosives in their former careers.

As a result of the call two officers had to investigate her claims, which involved searching the home of her former partner’s parents with whom he was staying.

The fiscal said it soon became apparent that the allegation was false, which Hughes admitted when she was interviewed by the police.

Sheriff Lorna Drummond fined her £300, reduced from £400 for an early plea.
