Letters / Monopoly in training

Having read about the proposed amalgamation of the Shetland College, the NAFC Marine Centre and Train Shetland, I have to say that I have reservations about all of it (Single college for Shetland by 2016; SN, 30/10/13).

Scalloway teaches specific types of training courses relevant to the fishing Industry; Shetland College teaches mainly craft and UHI courses and neither have much in common.

Train Shetland has a stranglehold on community and industrial related courses that is, I believe, detrimental to the private sector in Shetland.

To tie all three together will create a monopoly in training and qualification within Shetland that cannot be good for the local economy, nor can it ensure continuity of employment for those working at any of the three organisations.
