News / Five drivers caught with no insurance
POLICE in Shetland have expressed their dismay after seizing five cars in just three weeks from people driving without insurance cover.
They also caught eleven drivers speeding since the start of the month.
Chief inspector Angus MacInnes said officers would continue to stop drivers and check vehicles where appropriate as part of the force’s winter safety campaign.
The area commander described anyone getting behind the wheel without proper insurance as “very selfish”, as the consequences of being involved in an accident could be very costly.
According to the Scottish government the average cost of dealing with a road accident is calculated at a staggering £139,973.
Being caught driving without insurance will result in a fixed penalty of £300 plus six penalty points on the driving licence.
The vehicle will be impounded until insurance cover has been obtained.
MacInnes added that police officers continue to find a significant number of drivers speeding on island roads, despite earlier appeals to slow down.
He said of the eleven caught in the last three weeks one was well above the speed limit within a 20mph zone outside a school, and one was stopped doing 94 mph on a main road.
