News / Court round up – 17 October
A YOUNG Westside man was fined £400 after admitting sneaking into a house in Lerwick with the intent to steal, on 12 July this year.
Lerwick Sheriff Court heard that Darren Gray, of The Caravan, Skeld, had been high on some substance when committing the offence.
Sheriff Philip Mann told the 25-year-old that the fine was a direct alternative to a custodial sentence.
In a similar case, sentence on a 16-year-old boy was deferred until next month after he was found in a dwelling in Lerwick, in the early hours of 30 April.
Simon Newcombe, of North Lochside, Lerwick, admitted the charge.
The court heard that he was wearing dark clothes and had a torch with him when disturbed by the female householder.
Procurator fiscal Duncan Mackenzie said: “I don’t think he has any appreciation how serious this is.”
In other cases before the court on Thursday:
- Ross Chisholm, a 53-year-old Hydro Electric worker, with an address at Brentfield Place, Sandwick, was fined £500 and got six penalty points for speeding on the A970 on 3 August;
- Darrel Richards, of Sandy Loch Drive, Lerwick, was banned for a year and fined £700 for driving while twice the limit for alcohol, and failing to co-operate with police officers, on 17 July. The 28-year old can reduce the length of disqualification by three months if he successfully completes a drink-driver rehabilitation course;
- Sentencing of 41-year old James Goudie, of Scalloway Road, Lerwick, was deferred until 14 November after he admitted growing cannabis plants and possessing cannabis at an address in the town, on 17 June.
