News / Public indecency

TWO DRUNKEN Lerwick men who exposed themselves in front of police officers were fined £200 each at the town’s sheriff court, on Thursday.

Barry Coutts, aged 36, of 28 Grodians, and Brian Costley, aged 28, of 6 Mill Lane, both pled guilty to a charge of public indecency by exposing their genitalia late at night on 9 August on Lerwick’s busy Commercial Street.

Procurator fiscal Duncan Mackenzie described the incident as one of “drunken stupidity”.

There were a lot of people around, he said, including police officers. He added that there had been no serious sexual aspect to it.

Coutts and Costley, both defending themselves, said they were remorseful and apologised to the court.

Sheriff Philip Mann said this was “an extremely stupid and foolish thing to do” as they could have ended up on the sex offenders’ register.
