News / Dementia review
PROFESSOR June Andrews of Stirling University has been commissioned by Shetland Islands Council and NHS Shetland to carry out a review of the isles’ dementia services.
The director of the Dementia Services Development Centre (DSDC) is a recognised leader in the worldwide movement to improve services for people with dementia and their carers.
The review is part of both organisations’ move to integrate their services helping people with dementia.
The council said on Wednesday that Professor Andrews had visited Shetland a number of times and was familiar with its geography and the challenges that brings.
NHS Shetland director of clinical services and interim director of the council’s community care, Simon Bokor-Ingram, said with an aging population it was vital to review the services “to ensure they are fit for purpose and can provide as much care as possible” on the islands.
He added: “We now have an opportunity to look more closely at the amount of care we can and should be providing locally, and this has been the catalyst for the review.”
