News / Search for missing passenger called off
THE SEARCH for a 22-year old passenger missing from the NorthLink operated overnight ferry between Lerwick and Aberdeen was stood down on Monday night.
The young man had last been seen on board the Hjaltland at around 4am on Monday.
Aberdeen Coastguard immediately launched three lifeboats – Fraserburgh, Peterhead and Aberdeen – and two search and rescue helicopters when alerted a 6.23am.
They concentrated their search on an area off Peterhead. The Hjaltland also turned around to retrace her route as far north as Fraserburgh.
At one stage as many as 25 vessels were involved in the search. However, no trace of the man was found and the search was stood down on Monday night.
