News / Left police standing

A LERWICK labourer who sped past an unmarked police car at more than 100mph lost his licence and will have to resit his test.

Lerwick Sheriff Court heard that 22 year old James Sandison, of 17 Russell Crescent, raced at such a speed that it was as if the police vehicle was “standing still”, even though it was travelling at the regulation 60mph speed limit.

The officers decided to give chase, but made no impact until Sandison slowed down when he reached Lerwick.

Procurator fiscal Duncan Mackenie said they estimated he was driving “well in excess of 100 miles per hour”.

On Thursday he pled guilty to dangerous driving along the A970 at Gulberwick and Lerwick’s South Road on 25 May.

Describing it as a highly dangerous piece of driving, Sheriff Philip Mann banned Sandison for 12 months, which was reduced from 18 months for the early plea.

He said he would have to resit the extended driving test and fined him £500.
