News / Oil boom port
LERWICK Port Authority continue to cash in on the current oil and gas boom.
Oil related shipping was up 26 per cent during the first six months of 2013, with oil related cargo handling growing even faster at 42.5 per cent to 93,063 tonnes.
Support for offshore projects and shipments of equipment for the construction of the Shetland Gas Plant and its onward transportation by sea and road, were a feature of the period, the port authority said.
Overall, the harbour saw more or less exactly the same number of ships arriving between January and June this year, however the tonnage of shipping was up nine per cent to 6.1 million gross tonnes.
Deputy chief executive Victor Sandison said the investments in improved and expanded deep-water piers continue to deliver results.
“Two additional quays will be completed in the second half of the year, further expanding the infrastructure, and other developments are in the pipeline.”
