News / Jarmson faces jail
A SELF employed electrician who was caught drink driving for the fifth time last month has been told he is likely to be sent to prison.
On Thursday Lerwick Sheriff Court heard that 35 year old Calum Jarmson had driven off in his partner’s car from their house at Hazelbank, in Dunrossness, Shetland, on 29 June.
He was stopped shortly afterwards by police on the main A970 near Toab where he was found to be almost twice the legal limit for drink driving.
In court Jarmson admitted taking a car without the owner’s authority, and driving while disqualified and without insurance while drunk.
Sheriff Philip Mann called for social work background reports, which are required before sending someone to prison for the first time.
Even Jarmson’s defence agent Tommy Allan said that prison was the most likely outcome and that the main issue was whether he could be granted bail so he could finish off a number of jobs he had started before being sent down.
Procurator fiscal Duncan Mackenzie opposed bail, warning that there was a real risk he would commit the same offence again.
“When he has difficulties in his personal life he will drink, and thereafter there is a real risk of him driving,” he said.
Sheriff Philip Mann granted bail on condition that Jarmson does not contact his partner and remains at his parents’ house at Jaarahjem, in Whiteness, every night between 7pm and 7am until his next court appearance on 22 August.
