PUPILS and teachers at the Nesting primary school were celebrating on Monday after receiving a highly commended award in the Total Green School Awards.

Newly appointed Shetland Gas Plant facility management co-ordinator Jenny Wink presented the award and handed a cheque for £100 to head teacher Kate Coutts.

The school had entered the ‘Da Thing’ project in the ‘Totally Clued Up’ category for Scotland.

Coutts said the school was delighted with the recognition and said it had embarked on a busy programme of engaging with the local community and also to try and put Nesting on the map.

“It brings together all the stories of sons and daughters of Nesting going back generations, and taking each of those stories and highlighting them in a different area of the school grounds as well as making an art or garden piece that would capture that story.

“What we are trying to do is to get the community to come into the school; and we are doing that through open days, showing arts and crafts from local people, working in partnership with the local hall and the Up-Helly Aa committee and the shop.”

The Total Green School Awards is a nationwide competition for five to 11 year olds, which is run by the Young People’s Trust for the Environment (YPTE) in partnership with oil and gas company Total.

The competition aims to generate interest in the environment and raise awareness of the need for sustainable energy sources.
