MOVIES of old Shetland will be touring the isles in the near future following the appointment of a project development officer.

Helen Smith, best known for her work at the local BBC station Radio Shetland, will start her new job establishing a movie archive in early August.

Shetland Moving Image Archive Group chairwoman Pat Christie said: “With her background working in the media industry and excellent communication skills she will be a huge asset to our project.

“I cannot wait to start working with Helen and to see where our venture leads from here.”

Smith described the work the volunteer board had undertaken in the past few years as “astounding”.

“We will be holding screenings around Shetland in the next few months and everyone is invited along to view some of the films we’re working with, and to find out more about the project,” she said.

Christie added that the appointment would not have been possible without funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund and from LEADER.
