News / Bouncers found guilty

TWO LERWICK nightclub bouncers were found guilty of assaulting a young man following a trial at the town’s sheriff court, on Monday.

Brian Smith, of 5 Arnheim, and Keith Reynolds, of Brookside, Gremista, were both fined. A third accused was found not guilty.

The assault took place in a dark alleyway near the Peerie Shop Café shortly after midnight on 8 April last year.

The court was shown CCTV footage of a commotion outside Posers Nightclub in which the victim Jonathan Sinclair is seen lashing out at Reynolds after being refused entry to the club.

Sinclair had pled guilty to a charge of assault and was fined at an earlier court hearing.

The CCTV footage did not show the assault itself, but some of the accused could be seen following Sinclair after he left the entrance area of the nightclub.

Sinclair told the court that he tripped when realising he was being chased. He said three men then started punching and kicking him while he was on the ground.

He sustained small cuts to his head and bruises to head, ribs and his back.

There was uncertainty about who exactly was involved in the assault; Sinclair said he didn’t know their names at the time but knew their faces as bouncers.

Sheriff Philip Mann fined 49 year old Smith £500, and 30 year old Reynolds £400.
