News / Pupils to be taught in groups
COUNCILLORS in Shetland have agreed a new way to deliver instrumental tuition to school children.
They said they were confident that teaching groups of pupils would “better balance the provision” while at the same time saving £182,000 per annum.
As of August a pilot scheme involving one school and one instructor will explore the options of teaching pupils in groups rather than on a one to one basis. The annual charge will remain at £140, and parents and pupils will be fully consulted.
Education and families committee chair Vaila Wishart said the redesign of the service would go some way to “repair what was becoming a broken service”.
She added: “I know it is not a statutory service and I think it should be.”
Frank Robertson agreed saying the service had been on the brink of disintegrating.
He said instrumental tuition was “important for Shetland” as many pupils were achieving national standards.
