News / Walk to help cure diabetes
JUVENILE Diabetes Shetland is planning for a weekend of events to raise awareness of type 1 diabetes in the isles.
The voluntary group was set up five years ago to help fund research to find a cure for disease.
There are currently between 15 and 20 children in Shetland with the incurable condition, caused by a problem with the immune system.
The group will host an information day with representatives from the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) on Saturday 1 June, to be followed by a sponsored walk the following day.
Starting and finishing at Lerwick’s Gilbertson Park games hall, the “Walk to Cure Diabetes” will take participants on a 5k or a an 8k circular route.
Organiser Sandra Summers said the support they had received from their sponsor, oil and gas logistics firm ASCO, enabled them to offer a fun filled family day with events before and after the walk.
“The committee wanted to produce an event that was more than just a sponsored walk. With the help of our sponsors, committee and volunteers we hope to offer a fun packed day.
“We will have hot food available following the walk along with other entertainments for everyone participating.
“We will also have a raffle, home bakes stall, plant stall and tombola. And, hoping for a fine day, a few of Shetland’s footballers will be offering a fun kick-about session after the walk, so anyone wishing to take part should bring appropriate footwear.”
