News / Lerwick market plans
AN OUTDOOR market will be trialled in Lerwick following the decision to pedestrianise Harrison Square this week.
Shetland Islands Council approved plans to ban vehicles from the square on Wednesday after the Cancer Research charity shop withdrew their objection.
The Living Lerwick project set up to develop the town’s business development plan plans to open a market in time for its Fair Isle Festival from 4 to 11 August.
Harrison Square has been adopted as a sheltered car fee area for a trial area of 10 stalls, the first of which has already been set up.
Living Lerwick manager Christena Irvine said: “This pedestrianisation also means that we can use Harrison Square as a community space.
“We are hoping in the long term that we can have a stage and there will be bands and things like that.
“It’s great for Lerwick and for the community.”
