News / Glasshouse funding
ENVIRONMENTAL action group Transition Shetland has been awarded further funding for a feasibility study into bringing the redundant glasshouse at Tingwall back to life.
On Thursday the Shetland LEADER local action group agreed to grant £9,000 towards the project, which comes on top of an earlier National Lottery grant of £10,000.
The study is designed to assess the structural condition of the building, which has been dormant for the past decade, and the level of interest in turning it into a community growing centre.
The group will approach consultants to tender for the work, which they hope will result in a business plan to attract further public funding to proceed with the project.
Transition Shetland chairman Pete Bevington said that they hoped the space could be used by individuals and groups to grow food, as well as for educational and therapeutic purposes.
“We are delighted to have received support from the Shetland LEADER panel, especially at a time when it is proving hard to access public funding,” Bevington said.
“We hope that very soon we will be able to appoint a consultant who can find out if this dream of having a flourishing community green space under glass at Tingwall can be realised.
“So many people have told us they would love to see this marvellous asset brought back to life, so we do hope that folk come forward to support making this a reality.”
