News / NorthLink seeks produce

FERRY operators NorthLink are looking for more island products to sell on their ships.

The company will be holding a Meet the Buyer event on 23 May, the first since the contract was taken over by Serco nine months ago.

Vessel support services senior manager Peter Hutchinson said NorthLink’s ships already carry plenty of Shetland products, including farmed salmon, dairy produce, soap, sandwiches and jewellery, but would be interested in any new lines.

Two weeks ago company representatives were in the isles to meet community representatives, which is where the idea of the Meet the Buyer event was floated with Shetland Islands Council’s economic development unit.

“We like to promote what is available on the isles, particularly on our menus and in the shops on board – part of the principle that we have is looking to buy local,” Hutchinson said.

He added that Serco were very keen to continue the approach which was adopted when NorthLink started operating the ferries 11 years ago.

Orkney produce is more widely available, but the company is hoping to source more from Shetland in the future.

SIC economic development manager Douglas Irvine described the Meet the Buyer event as an ideal opportunity to pitch products to procurement personnel.

“We would encourage anyone who’s interested to get in touch,” he said.

Anyone who wants more information or to make an appointment to meet Serco NorthLink on 23 May can do so by contacting SIC project manager Sheila Keith on 01595 744967 or sheila.keith@shetland.gov.uk
