Letters / The Great War
I am currently undertaking research on Shetland soldiers during World War 1. As part of this I am gathering together any family stories, kept or preserved by households, about relatives who may have served in World War 1, with emphasis on Scottish Regiments.
This would also include personal details about soldiers who served before, during, and after the war. Such information is vitally important so that the historical story can be further developed.
If anyone has any manuscript, service detail, letters, or even any ”verbal tale” and anecdotes which they would like to share, it would be greatly appreciated by me in obtaining a copy.
The Shetland Roll of Honour and Roll of Service provides photos of those who did not return. Photographs of relatives and forbearers who did return would be greatly valued. Very often an old photo will lie in the loft or be hidden in a cupboard. If this involves passing a photo on to me, I will take due care of it, copy and then return.
The best time to have collated such information would have been when these valiant men were still around, but the years have gone. Nevertheless any information, however small, is part of a jigsaw, and begins to fit into the wider story linked to the wider picture of The Great War.
