PUPILS from the Lunnasting primary school have raised more than £125 for UNICEF after learning about the ‘Parable of the Talents’.

The well known biblical story tells of a nobleman who leaves his money (talents) with his servants to look after while he is away travelling.

On his return two of his servants have earned a profit by investing the money, while the third had buried it, because he was scared to lose it.

Putting their knowledge into practice their teacher Heidi Magnusson gave them each one pound and instructed them to use it wisely.

So they went out buying craft materials, sponges and shampoo as well as baking ingredients and busied themselves with selling hand-made cards, cupcakes and washing friends’ and neighbour’s cars for a fee.

Sam Nicolson even went to collect driftwood from the beach to sell it as firewood. When he realised that sawing it by hand was hard work he paid his father to cut it with an electric saw.

After three weeks they had earned £126.89. Their teacher said: “They definitely made the money grow.”

Sparked by the plight of the people of Syria, the primary four to seven class agreed to donate the money to UNICEF “to support the less fortunate ones”.
