Letters / Bad for business
If it wasn’t so stupid I think I might laugh with this carry on about bollards being erected going up past the Clydesdale Bank (Burns Walk bollards; SN 7/3/13).
As someone who has grown up in Lerwick this now feels like closing the gate after the horse has bolted.
I have spent my life on the streets of Lerwick where the range of shops were excellent with butchers, bakers, grocery stores etc. and the street teeming with people doing their shopping.
Now about the only thing left are charity shops and cafes, so not a lot of inspiration to head for the streets these days.
Yes it is more handy to come past the Clydesdale Bank if you need to pick up prescriptions or get chips as to try and drive in from the other end of the street, for these two things are a nightmare to go in for.
For many years no cars were allowed to come in past Thulecraft as I assume it was classed as too dangerous, but now the council and police seem to think it’s more fun for drivers (and pedestrians) to have cars come in and try to do a three point turn outside the Fort takeaway.
Come on guys, get a grip.
The days of big crowds on the street shopping are long gone.
Let’s not see any more places closing down.
