News / Tugs win contract

SHETLAND Islands Council’s harbour tugs at Sullom Voe have won a rare private contract to boost income.

This week they will start towing barges laden with modules, each weighing between 250 and 300 tonnes, for the Total gas plant to the Sullom Voe construction jetty.

The first load of modules arrived in Lerwick harbour on board the heavy lift ship Gloria last Tuesday.

The council’s interim manager for ports & harbours, Bill Davidson, said that with reduced tanker traffic at Sullom Voe oil terminal, the contract could be fulfilled without any impact on the core tanker-handling business.

“The team at Sella Ness are to be congratulated for bringing in this charter work, where the additional income will be very welcome,” he said.

The £100,000 contract was won from the Dutch transportation company Mommoet.
