News / Where’s Shetland?
THE EDITOR of the TV Times has apologised to Shetland islanders after a major blunder in the weekly programme guide that once again shows how poor people’s knowledge of northern geography is.
Previewing Sunday night’s broadcast of the crime drama Shetland, the magazine published a map highlighting the wrong northern isles group.
Shetland folk are used to seeing their islands placed in a box next to the Moray Firth on maps, but rarely are they mistaken for Orkney.
Editor Ian Abbott said everyone at the magazine, which has a weekly circulation of 275,000, was sorry about what he called an “innocent faux pas”.
“We would like to apologise to the residents of Shetland for our mistake,” he said.
“The map was supplied by an external picture agency and was not created by us. However, we should have checked its accuracy before publishing.
“I hope that our innocent faux pas will be quickly forgiven by the good people of Shetland, whom we had no intention of offending.
“We are extremely excited about the start of the series Shetland and look forward to learning more about the islands.”
Shot partly in the isles last summer, Shetland will be broadcast on BBC1 on Sunday and Monday evening, starting at 9pm.
