THE UK government has finally signed an agreement with the oil industry that will see the release of the stand-by vessel Grampian Frontier during maritime emergencies in the waters to the north of Scotland.
The tug, operated by North Star Shipping and on contract to BP, is currently stationed in the Schiehallion field to the west of Shetland.
The vessel will support the tug Herakles, the only dedicated emergency towing vessel patrolling UK waters.
During the launch of the agreement at Aberdeen Harbour on Monday, BP’s North Sea regional president Trevor Garlick said: “BP and North Star are pleased to be able to offer assistance to the Government regarding the provision of emergency towing capability.
“BP has had a major presence in the Shetland region for many decades and is investing significantly to develop its business there.
“While the primary risk to the marine environment and Scottish coastline is from transient vessels passing the islands, as opposed to from the domestic oil and gas industry, we are prepared to help in the interests of the wider community.
The move was instantly welcomed by the Scottish fishing industry.
The chief executive of the Scottish Fishermen’s Federation, Bertie Armstrong, said: “Our fishing industry depends upon clean seas and healthy marine ecosystems, and it is vital that there is adequate provision for short-notice towing capability in the event of any incident around our coasts.”
