Letters / Town v country
The public toilet at Melby, Sandness, is an essential part of Shetland outdoor activities.
It is a basic need for the area as there is nowhere else to go to use a toilet other than the seaside or the hillside.
The nearest public toilet is six miles away at Walls.
This is another matter of town versus country – do the councillors walk or enjoy the countryside?H
ave they ever given consideration to such a splendid amenity?
The Lochside toilets in Lerwick are really an advantage and a huge amenity for the country folk travelling, especially the lorry drivers, bus drivers, truck drivers, drivers with trailers, delivery van drivers and even cherry picker drivers.
Where can you stop at a congested Viking bus station or a congested Esplanade bus stop and leave your vehicle?
Lochside is on a main through route in Lerwick; the Lochside stop is not so often used by buses and the toilet is adjacent to the bus stop.
How can you go into the Clickimin Centre (a distance away) with space suits and outdoor rig? And then you intend to share the centre with the high school!
The toilet at Melby is the same standard as the toilet at Meal beach, Hamnavoe, in Burra Isle. Both toilets are of a high standard with stainless steel utensils and very low maintenance, which is all that is required by the public.
Shetland tries to promote tourism and the health board tries to have us live an outdoor life.
How does doing away with this essential amenity fit into your planning and how far ahead do you look?
