EIGHT YOUNG Shetlanders have put their names forward to contest the islands’ two seats at the Scottish Youth Parliament.
The winning candidates will represent the isles in the youth parliament for two years from June 2013 after sitting members Nicole Mouat and Emily Shaw stand down.
Islanders between the age of 12 and 26 can cast their vote using their Young Scot NEC card between 4 February and 15 March.
The result will be announced by the council’s returning officer Jan Riise.
The candidates are (in alphabetical order): Andrew Bain – Lerwick, Samuel Barlow – Skeld, Catherine Hannah – Sandwick, Diana Inkster – Scalloway, James Leonard – Mossbank, Samuel McCormack – Sandwick, Kaylee Mouat – Scalloway and Sammy-Jo Wallace – Dunrossness.
Local election co-ordinator Martin Summers said: “We are delighted that so many young people have put themselves forward this year for the two seats.
“I wish all the candidates success as they campaign in the coming weeks.”
