News / South gets fit
SOUTH mainland folk will soon have no excuse to be unfit after a donation of gym equipment to Sandwick junior high school.
Oil firm BP donated the high tech gear they were throwing out after refurbishing and refitting the Sullom Voe terminal corporate fitness suite.
The new equipment includes two rowing machines, two power treadmills, a cross trainer, two exercise bikes, a multi-gym, a bench and a set of dumbbells.
Sandwick head Stuart Clubb pledged to find a way to let local people use the new gym facility, which is based in a disused classroom.
Clubb said the first step would be to train up school staff to supervise pupils, after which they will look at how to open it up to others.
“We are 100 per cent committed at looking at ways of allowing members of the community to come into school to use the facility,” he said.
“We were particularly keen to secure this for south mainland Shetland because this is one of the few areas in Shetland that doesn’t have this kind of gym facility, so it will be a great asset.”
BP Sullom Voe’s lead field material coordinator Will Arthur said he was delighted to have found a good home for the equipment.
