News / Chopper takes crewman to Bergen
THE SHETLAND-based coastguard helicopter completed a six-hour, 500-mile mission on Saturday when it took a crewman with a heart condition to hospital in Bergen.
Coastguards acted on advice from a company doctor who insisted the man was flown from the drillship West Navigator, 60 miles northwest of Unst, to the Norwegian city.
Bergen was nearer to the West Navigator’s position, in the West of Shetland oil and gas exploration area, than Aberdeen Royal Infirmary.
Search and Rescue 102 was contacted at 9.20am while out on a training session. The helicopter had to refuel twice, on the West Navigator and at Bergen airport, and returned to base at 3.20pm.
