News / Darts fans in court

TWO Lerwick men who were refused back into a darts tournament by security staff ended up in the dock at Lerwick Sheriff Court on Thursday.

James Douglas, age 29, of 116 Sandveien, and 25 year old Christopher Irvine, of 23 Cheyne Crescent, both admitted causing a breach of the peace and struggling violently with police officers on 14 July.

The court heard the pair had been told they could not get back into the darts event at Clickimin Leisure Complex because they had taken alcohol outside, even though Douglas argued that he had not done so.

Procurator fiscal Duncan Mackenzie said the situation was made worse by a group of drunk men who taunted the pair, while security staff did a poor job of controlling the situation.

Shortly afterwards two police officers turned up to arrest Douglas and Irvine at the nearby Tesco car park.

Douglas, the court heard, was worried about being arrested having served a prison sentence in the past for violence and had to be subdued by CS gas spray, while Irvine started pulling the female officer around.

Sheriff Philip Mann called for reports on Douglas and ordered him to remain on a curfew between 9.30pm and 6.30am ever day he is in Shetland.

The pair will reappear for sentence on 10 January.
