News / Honeymoon runaways
AN UNEMPLOYED Fraserburgh man who brought his new wife to Shetland for a honeymoon was convicted of running away from their bed and breakfast without paying on Wednesday.
At Lerwick Sheriff Court, 43 year old John Aaron Jones, of 20 Kinnaird Road, admitted he and his wife Rosemary left the Aurora guest house, on Lerwick’s King Harald Street, while still owing £490.
Procurator fiscal Duncan Mackenzie said they clearly knew they did not have the money to pay when they booked in to the bed and breakfast.
The proprietor became suspicious and they were arrested after she spotted them running off down the road after their stay on 31 May this year.
Defence agent Tommy Allan said the couple had come to the islands for their honeymoon and returned again for the court case, bringing with them £50 towards any fine.
Sheriff Philip Mann ordered Jones to pay the full amount they owed to the guest house as well as a fine of £150.
