News / Fire destroys house in Gloup

A ONE and a half storey house in Gloup, near Cullivoe in Yell, was severely damaged in a blaze on Thursday afternoon.

It took fire fighters from Mid Yell, Unst and Brae four hours to get the fire in the upper floor of the house under control. No one was injured.

They were called to the blaze at 1.25pm but it took the crews from Baltasound and Brae some time to reach the scene of the fire.

Fire Control in Inverness said the house was 50 per cent fire damaged, 75 per cent smoke damaged and 100 per cent water damaged.

Local people said it appeared that crews were having difficulties getting to the source of the fire in the cavity between the roof and walls.

Fire crews used 16 sets of breathing apparatus, two main jets and three hose reel jets to tackle the blaze.
