News / UK fish minister coming
SHETLAND fishermen will have the opportunity to quiz UK fishing minister Richard Benyon when he visits the islands on 20 November.
Northern isles MP Alistair Carmichael said he wanted the minister to meet local fishermen on their home ground, especially before the quota setting European fisheries council meets in December.
Carmichael said: “Representatives of our local fishing industry have seen the minister in London on a number of occasions, however I have always felt it is important that he meet fishermen from the isles in the isles and that is what this visit will achieve.
“As we move towards reform of the Common Fisheries Policy, input from the industry is critical.
“The northern isles are home to some of the biggest players in the UK fisheries market and it is only right that our local industry have the chance to put their concerns to ministers directly.
“Richard Benyon has made clear since his appointment that he would fight the corner of the Scottish fleet in Brussels and that is what he has done.
“Fishing is a vital part of our local economy and it is critical that the minister continues to make the case for our local industry.”
