News / Brilliant feeling despite defeat

James Morton.

HILLSWICK student James Morton was last night beaten in the final of the popular BBC2 programme The Great British Bake Off when 23 year old John Thwaite took the title.

Following a nail-biting final, watched by an estimated six million viewers, Morton told the nation that taking part in the show had been one of the best experiences in his life.

Reaching the final of the show has turned the 21 year old medical student into a celebrity who managed overnight to add another almost 10,000 followers to his Twitter account at @bakingjames

He said on BBC television: “It does genuinely feel like everyone is a winner. It feels absolutely brilliant. There are no commiserations going round; it’s all congratulations, and well done. Overall, one of the best experiences in my life.”

Congratulating James Morton, local MSP Tavish Scott said on Wednesday morning that he had done Shetland proud.

“James’ experimental style and interesting flavours captivated the audience almost as much as his Fair Isle sweaters.  It was great to see an all-male final which will, hopefully, inspire others to give baking a go.

“James is obviously a gifted multi-tasker – how he fits his baking around his medical studies is just amazing.  Personally, I think I’d be better at judging the Bake Off than competing.

“James did a super job getting to the final and I hope I have the chance to taste one of his creations at some point to say nothing of sharing a commitment to wearing Fair Isle patterns,” Mr Scott said.

The final of The Great British Bake Off can be watched again on BBC iPlayer.
