News / Admonished for tying up woman

TWO Latvian men walked free from Lerwick Sheriff Court after admitting they tied a woman to a chair to restrain her before going out on a spree.

The court heard the woman was angry with her partner Agris Kezbers when he started drinking with his friend Juris Lapcenoks at the couple’s house in Cunningsburgh on 3 December last year.

The court heard the woman was known for her temper and when she became heated the pair used adhesive tape to tie her arms and legs to a chair.

Procurator fiscal Duncan Mackenzie said the incident was “nowhere near as sinister” as the charge of assault suggested.

He explained the incident started out as a prank but the pair had become increasingly concerned about how she would react when she broke free, so they left her in the house on her own, where she managed to free herself and call the police.

When 39 year old Kezbers, who now lives at 29 Cheyne Crescent, Lerwick, returned that evening the couple argued and he smashed a glass door, pleading guilty to reckless damage in court.

Defence agent Tommy Allan said that having represented the woman himself he could understand the two men’s concerns about her behaviour and Kezbers was now “delighted” to have ended the relationship “for his personal safety”.

The pair appeared on Wednesday after having sentence deferred for good behaviour.

Lapcenoks, who is aged 36 and lives at 1 Skerpalea, Sandwick, was admonished, while Kezbers, who admitted shouting and swearing at 5 Brind, Cunninsgburgh, on 11 May this year was fined £100.
