A CONTROVERSIAL and challenging musical performance about the life and death of a farmyard pig is coming to Shetland next month.
Lerwick’s Mareel is one of just seven venues on the Scottish tour of pioneering musician and producer Matthew Herbert, whose new show One Pig has garnered critical acclaim and righteous outrage since its debut last year.
One Pig is made up entirely of sounds from a single pig’s life from its birth to its butchering, though legal restrictions prevented the slaughter being recorded for the album on which the performance is based.
The show premiered at London’s Royal Opera House since when it has travelled around Europe and Japan, exploring and questioning the farming of pigs.
A chef cooks pork on stage while the music features a “sty harp”, custom built by Edinburgh-based artist Yann Seznec, amongst the five piece band.
The show at 8pm on Wednesday 7 November will be preceded by a free pre-show workshop open to all at 7pm, and will start with a question and answer sessions with Herbert himself.
The previous day he will be working with local music students.
Shetland Arts music development officer Bryan Peterson said: “Matthew Herbert is a true pioneer of sampling and electronic music and his body of work is astounding.
“The show will be quite challenging and provide a thought-provoking perspective on agriculture and food production that I’m sure will be of interest to Shetlanders.”
Tickets are available though Shetland Box Office online or at 01595 745555. Watch Matthew Herbert here.
