News / Faroese Olympic bid
NEIGHBOURING islands Faroe are seeking to field their own athletes at future Olympic Games rather than being part of the Danish team.
The Faroese bid for membership in the International Olympic Committee is reported to have received support from FIFA president Sepp Blatter, who is also a member of the IOC.
Having visited the Faroe Islands last week, Mr Blatter was lobbied by prime minister Kaj Leo Holm Johannesen.
The Faroese newspaper Dimmalætting reports that Blatter had agreed to look into the possibilities of making the islands an independent member of the IOC.
Meanwhile local football fans are expecting great things from their national team when it clashes with the Republic of Ireland as part of the World Cup qualifiers on Tuesday night (kick-off at 7pm), after only narrowly losing against a strong Swedish team last week.
The Republic of Ireland was thrashed by Germany 1-6, last Friday.
