News / Sullom Voe scholarships
Ten young students from Shetland have been given bursaries worth £2,000 each from the various scholarship trusts run by the Sullom Voe Terminal.
The funds have been established to promote and encourage the education of local residents who will be undertaking a course of study in a discipline likely to contribute to the social and/or economic development of the isles.
The recipients in this academic year are:
- Stuart Thomson of Mossbank, entering 5th year of Mathematical Physics at Edinburgh University;
- Laura Smith of Sandwick, entering 1st year of French at St Andrews University;
- Katya Moncrieff of Walls, entering 1st year of Chemistry with a European Language at Heriot Watt University;
- Ruth Mainland of Nibon, Northmavine, entering 5th year of English Literature at Edinburgh University; and
- Callum Williamson of Lerwick, entering 2nd year of Sport and Exercise Science at Stirling University.
- Continuing recipients for a second year, each receiving £2000, are Daniel Sandison from Heylor, Northmavine, and Jack Henderson and Alasdair Sim, both from Lerwick.
- Two further awards were made to Rhiannon Inkster and Kara Manson, both of Lerwick, who received £2,000 each.
Terminal manager Arthur Spence said: “Shetland has a fantastic education system and this is confirmed by the quality of applications we received this year.
“The young people receiving these awards are the future of Shetland. I know they will all do well at university and I look forward to watching them progress in their chosen careers.”
The trust continues to encourage new students to apply, as well as those who have previously applied. Invitations for next year’s applications (2013/2014) will be published in May 2013.
