News / Community orchestra brings folk together
AROUND 200 people enjoyed a varied concert by Shetland’s very own community orchestra in Mareel on Saturday night.
Under the leadership of conductors Mike Blyth and Nigel Haywood, the orchestra brings together local people from all walks of life who enjoy playing classical music.
Saturday’s concert included works from Sibelius, Bizet, Kodaly, Grieg and Bernstein. It also featured a number of traditional fiddle arrangements and a performance of Dalriada by Dick Lee, a piece written for two solo small pipes, two clarsachs, two accordions and three highland bagpipes with orchestra.
The Shetland Community Orchestra also gave a free rendition of Saturday’s concert in the Mid Yell Leisure Centre, on Sunday afternoon.
