Letters / Thank you to Whalsay
On Sunday 16 September this year ‘The Whalsay Runners’ completed the Great North Run, they were running in aid of Meningitis Research Foundation (MRF) and with the help of friends and islanders raised an amazing £5,292.50 – a truly remarkable amount! And thanks to the government gift aid scheme we can claim a further £1,148.13, a great added bonus!
The Scotland Office of MRF which is based in Edinburgh would like to say thank you for the great support received from the Whalsay community.
Special thanks go to local Marie Manson who was behind the scenes organising various fundraising events such as The Hoedown, A Fun Run, disco and a coffee morning.
Marie worked tirelessly for months so a huge thank you goes to her, the runners and the Whalsay community for attending the events and donating so generously, your support is much appreciated and funds raised will be put to excellent use in our fight against meningitis and septicaemia.
Meningitis & septicaemia – the blood poisoning form of the disease can strike people of any age at any time, but most cases are in babies, toddlers and young adults. They can kill and maim in hours, people who are faced with them have to act fast to save a life, until there are vaccines that prevent all major forms of the diseases, the importance of improved treatment, better diagnosis and increased awareness is paramount.
All money raised will enable us to fund research into the prevention, detection and treatment of meningitis and septicaemia, provide life-saving awareness information and support people who have lost a loved one or are struggling to cope with after effects.
