Letters / Well said, Dr Wills

Well said, Dr Wills (A charitable clusterbuckle; SN 14/9/12). I would have liked to have heard more like this 2-3 weeks ago.

You are right, this is a “craven, abject surrender,” so much for “The Norseman’s Home” and “never filling a craven’s grave”.

My personal feeling about the Shetland Charitable Trust (SCT) passing into the hands of what you referred to as an “appointocracy, in perpetuity” is utter revulsion. Frankly, I want to regurgitate my dinner.

I agree it is vital control should remain democratic however I am less enamoured than you with the past performance of SIC councillors.

Under their watch, control of the trust was handed to Viking Energy whose subsequent shenanigans at the helm resulted in both the arrival of OSCR and the subsequent decision to pass control to a team of selected stooges whom they would select to ensure progress towards their goals – “in perpetuity.”

Councillors who, you report, chose never to take advantage of local expertise, resulting in the time-honoured outcome of politicians “picking winners” – losers!

Councillors who when needed failed to attend and vote in arguably the most important decision in the history of the trust.

I want to see neither those who paid homage to King Alexander III’s Regent OSCR nor the “SCT-Day Dodgers” who left the field on the day as future trustees however they can yet redeem themselves.

We must look forward, not back. It’s time to overturn this scandalous, asinine, decision to surrender democratic control of the trust and fight for a solution along the lines of the eminently reasonable one proposed by Dr Wills.

Trustees, “right is might,” have the courage of your convictions; get off your backsides and fight for what is right.
